Tess of the d'Urburvilles

By Thomas Hardy. Adapted for the stage by Michael Fry. A Bristol Old Vic Theatre School touring production. Against the measured, idyllic background of the Dorset landscape, Hardy's most popular story unwinds with the inevitability of a Greek tragedy. Tess has the most enviable qualities of Woman- intelligence, sensitivity, independance of mind, integrity, compassion- but against a rigid class system and a ckoking social system which places respectability higher than morallity these these qualities are to little avail. The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School students bring to this production their usual virbant energy and sparkling young talent, cocooning Hardy's tale in a framework of song and music- the perfect enterainment for a summer's evening in the West Country.
